In this design of Salaam we see here that it could be a new of peace for an old subject. Arabic language has become very popular now a days given the growth of Islam, the Quran being revealed in Arabic and people just not convinced of all this ISLAMOPHOBIA.
People or inquiring minds wanna know whats up with that and here in the west we tend to fuse cultures together and make our own western Identity calling it “Westernization” anyway I think this should be the new logo for peace, and actually believe it is the only thing that will bring you true peace which is submission on Allah. But anyway that’s my 2 cents. The word in Arabic pronounced “Sal-lam” means Peace or submission to the will of Allah the only one true Creator. And the word at the bottom “PEACE” well means no fighting make amends the opposite of war. But the true sense can’t really be translated properly it just gives you an idea of the meaning.
The design works really well together though I think and has been very popular among urban styles seems like everybody wants to get it on their shirt!!! So what are you waiting?
In this session me and Abdullah do a ‘lil warm up before class its always good to bring your kids to the class as challenging as it is, but it shows you not only wanna help the community but also you own family live a healthy life style.
Preparing the kids for grading some of them seemed a bit “iffy” but reminded them about the importance of it. I myself was not sure given the circumstance of transportation that day nevertheless among others it’s all about getting kids in shape mentally, physically and spiritually!! Continue reading →

The workshop at the Y.W.C.A. Hamilton and let me tell you it was quite the task! I was pretty much double booked wasn’t sure if I was going to do it but I said to myself it could be a good opportunity to motivate under privilege kids who wouldn’t realize it otherwise. I found myself standing in front about 50 kids! I would never done martial arts before so I thought back to basics keep it simple stupid n you’ll be okay! Continue reading →
In this class Sensei Yusuf had come back from Jiu-jitsu camp so we were all excited to see what stuff he had learned and as good as he is its nice to see a teacher continuing his/her education to be and do better as a martial artist something we should all learn from. Class had already started my self and Osama got there and started with a warm up:
Sparring your partner (as well as others) at 30% the reason for this is not to get too tired as well it warms up the body and stretches out your muscles, gets you loose so to speak.
I sparred three students: Sean, Saboor, Abdul and Mirza.
Sensei Yusuf taught us some new techniques pinning the shoulders and the TRICK CHOKE.
In this technique is a little different instead of regular choke or cross-chokes it is done near the neck area crossing had on opposite sides of the opponent gui, with this you grab one neck line of the his/her gui and with the other hand you sneakingly grab the gui near his/her waiste line and pull your elbow straight back! They unexpectingly do not notice the second lower grab hence the name trick choke. It was very cool and stealthy move to use.
We tried this move with different partners then had a break. We had full sparring for 45 minutes one of the highlights was full sparring with Sean its always a great work out with him. Near the end of class the numbers had dropped of attendance so Yusuf stressed to “be consistent in the classes” to make it beneficial.
The Main benefit for me was the competitiveness with sparring it felt like we did something challenging and worthwhile which always seems to bring out the best in an individual.
Think of ways of to beat your opponent for me patient while sparring, be loose and not rigid you should flow like water!!
It was Friday taif (thank allah its friday!) and my cousin Eeshan had came all the way from BUFFALO NEW YORK dying to come to martial arts class and finally got his chance he was so excited he almost forgot to wear his shoes, on our way out!! It’s all about feeling when you teaching kids, the feeling you get and of course the reward for when there is progress. “Are you ready yet Omar Uncle?” Eeshan asked. Almost!! I said. “Just make sure you put both your shoes on first might help?!” I replied. We arrived at the class and got right into the warm up:
Jogging one 1 spot (1 min)
25 jumping jacks
Continue jogging on 1 spot (hand hitting back of heel)
25 jumping jacks again
20 sit ups
15 push ups
Arm rotations standing position
In sitting stance position double front snap kick (double up on every count 10 sets)
Low section block 100 each arm in walking stance position using recoiling technique as a focus;
The concept of recoiling the hips with blocks punches and kicks adds pounds and pounds of power to them, if you can imagine winding a spring coil and then releasing it all that kinetic energy while released will add more power to the technique no matter how big or small you are.
We then took a break 2 min
Round house kicks with partner this is like target practice exercise one partner sticks his hand out while you partner (the kicker) hits your hand kinda like target kicking practice full lenght of the dojo.
It was a really enjoyable class especially for Eeshan. New students always bring a great sense of enthusiasm to the table which is always refreshing. His round house kicks were not all ther but the energy and heart would have gotten him out of any battle!! Near the end of class we split everybody into two groups; one side did cario punching on the punching bags, the other I sparred individually and the all seemed to be improving at a good pace. After that I started doing bo-staff with Uzair and broke down the push pull methodolgy even Eeshan got a chance at it but emphasized the staff is just an extention of the hand so its better to be good and at basic hand skills then more weapons. After all the wepon is just an extention of the hand.
Being able to move is important in order to stay out of harm’s way, but moving with correct techniques properly can be a split difference in a life death situation. Bobbing and weaving are one of a boxers staple moves in order to deliver knock out blows to an opponent it comes in real handy in CLOSE CONTACT situations; imagine you are in an elevator after a long hard days work all of a sudden scruffy looking guy besides you grabs you and says “Empty out your wallet!!” Doing a front snap kick may not be in you best option, but by bobbing and weaving it will train you to move fast effectively in order to move out of harms way or delivering a few knuckle sandwiches or a take down self defense technique just let them know delivery charges are on the house!!
